Some of the best cruise lines have ships that accommodate over 3,000 passengers and others accommodate only a few.
Large cruise ships are sometimes compared to floating resorts -- they can offer expansive spa and fitness centers, daily enrichment programs, multiple swimming pools, lounges and dining areas, and special programs for children - all with the convenience of unpacking only once to travel and experience a variety of destinations.
Small cruise ships can cruise close to the shoreline and dock in ports that are inaccessible to the larger ships. They offer a more intimate experience and often include a wider range of shore excursions and on-board amenities in the base cruise price.
We categorized the large cruise ships as those owned by one of the major cruise lines, with a large fleet and diverse itineraries.
The small cruise ship lines are sometimes referred to as alternative cruises, niche cruises, adventure cruises, boutique cruises or eco-cruises. The ships generally carry less than 500 passengers; some have a distinctive itinerary - such as cruising the Galapagos Islands or the fjords in Norway - that does not change. Others travel the world on exotic itineraries for a fortunate few.
The experiences are very different on large and small cruise ships. Contact us at
